This was one of the first books I read on the subject of skepticism and for me, it was like a breath of fresh air. It was proof that there were many others beside me who raised their eyebrows in disbelief of the unsubstantiated and often bizarre claims out there.
What I like about this book, and others by Michael Shermer, is that it is written for anyone to understand. Some writers on this subject use language steeped in scientific jargon making it hard to relate to. This book doesn't do that. It is fun to read and not an effort to understand.
In it he covers not only some of the weird beliefs systems out there from UFOs to cults, but discusses why and possibly how these odd belief systems happen.
After reading it for the first time I went onto the Skeptic Society website and signed up for the online newsletter which is also a great read. I have read this book a couple more times since that first time a few years ago, and it's great each and every time. I highly recommend it.
